We Are A Creation Nation

Disturbed
I have been rather disturbed by the way that we use technology. I’ve seen husbands and wives, dining together, but each on their smartphones. I’ve seen fathers and sons, seated together but hardly a word is being exchanged, as both are so preoccupied with their devices. I’ve noticed how when people are waiting in line, and to fill that time, will pull out their devices and start getting engaged.

We all see that and we are all guilty of it. The only difference is the magnitude of it.

I’ve been guilty of it before, where I was so engrossed with downloading an app that I told my son he had to wait for me before I can attend to him. Sad.

Creation Nation
We live in a era of Creation Nation. This is an extremely exciting era, where we are no longer just consuming products, services, and information: but we can partake in its creation.

Up until recently, one can only read articles written by journalists. And because of their positions of influence, what they write can literally change the way we think, see, do, and feel. For example, when we watch CNN, if we do not exercise discernment, we can tend to believe everything that is being reported. However armed with a smartphone and when faced with a situation, we can snap a photo, write a caption, and post it on social media sites that, depending on your number of followers, can be read by millions around the world!

In fact, because of the tools available to us (smartphones armed with a great camera, ability to produce content, and access to the greatest gateway in the history of our times), everyone is now an individual who can create and not just consume.

Not All Seize The Opportunity
However, while we are in the position to create, not all of us will seize that opportunity to do so. Probably because we are still stuck in the old paradigm that to create is the privileged few who have been given permission. For instance, you may have extensive experience in marketing but perhaps you thought to yourself, “who am I to share where there are gurus like Seth Godin out there?”. But many a times we missed the point that their perspectives may or may not be accurate or correct. Or perhaps some may even have an agenda to influence you into taking action that will only benefit them. And thats why, you must never deny yourself (us) of your ability to create, to re-present the world from your view point, to help us think, see, feel, or do better.

Question
So, how are you using technology? Are you a slave to it or do you command it to serve you so as to enable you to serve others?

Prayer
Father we pray that as we consume information we do so in a way that we can, in turn, use those information to synthesize and create more information responsibly so as to influence others to lead an engaged life. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
